The director of Barton’s film said in a statement that those involved with the movie were “saddened” Barton will not be at the event.
“I along with everyone on the ‘Homecoming’ team are saddened to hear that Mischa Barton will not be able to attend the film’s premiere tonight in New York,” director Morgan J. Freeman said in a statement to Access on Thursday. “Her performance in ‘Homecoming’ is fantastic, and she will be missed at our premiere.
“We hope she is OK,” Freeman added, “and that her condition is not serious.”
Sources close to the film told Access Barton was due to fly into New York City on Wednesday evening. She had a photo shoot scheduled and was going to head out to the premiere around 3 PM on Thursday.
Barton is the star of “Homecoming,” playing Shelby, the ex-girlfriend of a football player in a small town, who does whatever it takes to get her beau back. The film co-stars Jessica Stroup of “90210” and Matt Long of ABC’s “The Deep End.”
“She has been dealing with a lot of personal issues,” a pal tells PEOPLE about the actress who has been spotted club hopping in L.A. and London the past few months. “I don’t know if she really ever gave up some of the bad habits that had gotten out of control a couple years back.”
The 23-year-old actress was scheduled to attend the premiere of her movie Homecoming Thursday night in New York City but remained at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles where she was reportedly placed under psychiatric hold.
“I wish her all the best. First and foremost, we want her to get healthy again,” Homecoming producer Austin Stark tells PEOPLE. “It’s obvious we’d like her to support the movie and be here, but we hope she gets better.”
And of shooting Homecoming with Barton in Pittsburgh, Stark says, “When she was on-set, she acted like a professional. I honestly had no complaints. She struck me as a nice young girl, she never said anything mean to anyone, and she wasn’t late on-set or anything like that.”
Actress Mischa Barton, 23, canceled a scheduled appearance at the New York premiere of her new film Homecoming tonight, one day after reportedly calling the Los Angeles Police Department with a health problem.
People magazine reports that police were called to Barton’s home at 3 p.m. Wednesday for a “medical issue.” The star’s rep, Craig Schneider, told People that the LAPD officers were there simply to protect the star:
“Police were involved due to Ms. Barton’s celebrity status, to safely transfer her to medical treatment as per doctor’s orders,” he said, adding that the actress is now “okay and resting.” (Police would not confirm Access Hollywood‘s claim that the actress has been placed under involuntary psychiatric hold at an L.A. hospital.)
According to the CW’s Paul McGuire, Barton’s upcoming drama The Beautiful Life, which begins production July 22 and premieres Sept. 16, will not be affected by the incident.
I spoke with a family representative and confirmed that Mischa Barton was taken to the hospital due to complications from oral surgery.
Contrary to the gossip that has been tweeted by the LA Police and Access Hollywood there was nothing illicit going on as was implied.
The surgery involved deep impacted wisdom teeth that had to be removed from her jaw bones.
Her family is with her and she is being treated with antibiotics.
As a rule of thumb, the younger the age of the person having the wisdom teeth extractions the less potential they will have for experiencing complications. Studies have shown that the number of complications, related to both healing as well as the procedure itself, that occur in association with wisdom tooth extractions increases once a patient has passed into their mid to late 20’s.
The pain associated with a dry socket can be moderate to severe in intensity and often has a throbbing component. The pain can be just localized to the extraction site or it may radiate from the extraction site to the patient’s ear or eye (on the same side of their face).
A dry socket, more formally referred to as alveolar osteitis by dentists, is a fairly common complication associated with tooth extractions. The formation of a dry socket involves a scenario where the blood clot which forms in the tooth socket’s after the extraction isn’t properly retained (either it disintegrates by way of fibrinolysis or becomes dislodged). Since this blood clot is an important factor in protecting the boney socket and initiating the healing process, the healing of the extraction site is interrupted and becomes delayed.
We wish Mischa a speedy recovery!
This isn’t directly Mischa related but it bodes well for the potential success of TBL.
Supermodel to star alongside Mischa Barton in three seasons of ‘The Beautiful Life’
Elle MacPherson has every right to be pleased with herself. Not only has she just received a complimentary Jaguar XJ for a year, her latest TV show, The Beautiful Life has just been commissioned by American network CW.
When I caught up with the Australian Supermodel last week she seemed over the moon by the News. ‘They have just commissioned three seasons of the show and I’m really looking forward to filming it,’ She told me. ‘The pilot was a huge success so they are backing the show and are giving it prime billing.’
Another preview clip for “Homecoming” has come up online. Remember, the film opens in theatres from July 17th!!
The film will be shown in Los Angeles, New York and Lousville from July 17th and will then expand to additional cities including Denver, Colorado and Madison, Wisconsin from July 24th. Follow this link for exact cinema locations.
