Global dignitaries, activists and celebrities including Her Majesty Queen Rania Al Abdullah of Jordan, Emeritus Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Annie Lennox, John Legend, Rahul Bose, Anqelique Kidjo, Scarlett Johannsson, Missy Higgins, Emmanuel Jal, Wyclef Jean and Mischa Barton are calling out to leaders to keep their Millennium Development Goal promises, through the international release of a new song by Black-Eyed Peas frontman will.i.am.
Under the umbrella of the Global Call to Action Against Poverty alliance, in my name will be released September 25, 2008, as the UN meets for an emergency poverty summit in New York. The release also marks the launch of a major global campaign action, also called in my name, challenging people all over the world to hold to account their leaders for their poverty promises.
‘In My Name’ is organized by the Global Call to Action Against Poverty (GCAP) with support from Save the Children, Oxfam International and Comic Relief.
Today she’s just come back from South Africa, where she visited a school in Soweto as part of her role as ambassador for Save the Children. She describes the trip as “life-changing” and her work for the charity as a “calling”.
“I went to see this little boy, Tembinkosi,” she tells me. “He was so sweet and shy. He was only eight . . . He has no toys. He sleeps on the floor in a room full of dirt and he only gets one meal a day. It was terrible. But if I can raise money, that will make a difference.”
So another photogenic star uses vulnerable children in Africa for a profile boost between film projects? “Well, if cynical journalists think that, I think that’s pretty jaded and sad,” Barton retorts. “If someone takes the time to actually go, I don’t think people sitting on their bums writing articles have the right to say anything, actually.”

Supporter Mischa Barton watched from the front row, telling PEOPLE “I do lot of work with Save the Children, and today I was doing press with them and they told me this charity is affiliated with theirs. I learned up on it, and Naomi is doing a good thing with it. She has always been very friendly and caring to me. She’s really sweet.”
I am Mischa Barton. I work with Save the Children to get 10 million people to take action by 2010 for the 10 million children who die every year. In my name, I want governments to help save the children who are dying needlessly every year before their 5th birthday.

Mischa Barton is all about the accessories right now, whether it’s those strutting down the catwalk at the Temperley London spring/summer show or her own ever expanding accessory line. At her friend Alice Temperley’s catwalk show in London on Monday, the actress revealed what prompted her to add to her eponymous line of handbags with a hair accessory line: “I’m in between films right now. When I have free time, I have to do something creative,” she told PEOPLE. “So I’ve been designing a headband line with Stacey Lapidus — it’s really fun.” Temperley who showed a collection of feminine draped dresses mixed with edgier studded waistcoats, belts and towering heels certainly has a fan in Barton who gushed about, of course… the “amazing” accessories. “I love the way she puts things together. And if there was one look to covet? “I’m all into the studded belts and the shoes and vests.”
