Mischa Barton returns to TV this fall as troubled supermodel Sonja Stone, popping pills and trying to make a comeback after taking a six-month hiatus from her modeling career. No one understands why she had to take the break — but it is revealed in the first episode.
Mischa made headlines of her own last month when she was hospitalized, and the buzz was that she was being dropped from the cast. But exec producer Ashton Kutcher stood by her, and so have her co-stars.
“She’s amazing. She’s here to work. She’s really actually inspirational in terms of her artistic ability and endeavors,” Nico Tortorella, who plays Cole Shepherd, tells ET. “I think she’s an amazing person and I am so glad to have her here.”
And when asked how Mischa is doing, Ben Hollingsworth, who plays Chris Andrews, says, “She’s doing great. I mean, I think it’s really surprising to see just how great she is doing. She seems in great spirits.”
In fact, art may be imitating life in the character of Sonja, who is living her life in the spotlight, hounded by paparazzi, and is at a make-it-or-break-it time in her career.
“There are themes thematically that are exactly what is going on in Mischa’s life and she has embraced all of it in a really smart way. I hope this community will find it interesting that she is brave enough to do that,” exec producer Carol Barbee says.
In fact, having Mischa on board is a benefit, according to series creator/exec producer Mike Kelley, who says Mischa can pickup the phone and call her model and designer friends and get them on board.
“Versace came onboard and gave us a gold shimmer dress,” Mike cites as an example.
“The Beautiful Life” reveals the ugly truth behind the modeling world, telling the story through the lives of young models and their tough agent, played by supermodel Elle Macpherson, who says, “It is authentic in its human relations and it is authentic in its portrayal of the industry.”
The series, which will delve into drugs, sex and love triangles, also stars a “High School Musical” graduate, Corbin Bleu, who is the target of a cougar’s affections.
“It starts off at first as awkward and she’s pretty much just using him,” Corbin says of his storyline.
“The Beautiful Life” premieres Wednesday, September 16 at 9 p.m. on The CW.

Mischa Barton is hard at work again, putting in time today at a photo shoot for her new TV series The Beautiful Life in Queens, N.Y. Although today was supposed to be the first day of filming, weather problems have reportedly pushed back the schedule once again.
Despite rumors Mischa would be kicked-off the series after a much publicized meltdown and hospitalization earlier this month, Mischa’s co-stars say the star is doing great and had no problems during the past week of table readings, costume fittings and hair and makeup tests. But all this waiting has gotten her co-stars anxious to start filming.
“I found out last week that filming was going to be pushed and our sets weren’t ready,” co-star Sara Paxton told OK! at the Model Home Project kick-off at the Gates in NYC July 29. “I was fine with it. I’m excited to work.”
Despite reports Mischa was to blame for the previous schedule set-backs, her co-stars have nothing to say but the best about the actress.
“She’s hilarious and she’s just really fun to work with,” Sara says. “She’s sarcastic and cracking jokes all the time.”
While Mischa was a no-show at The Model Home Project’s Power of WE charity kick-off event, which raises money for disaster relief, other cast members spent the night dancing and mingling among professional models who came out to support the cause – which was a perfect opportunity for some character research.
“[The Beautiful Life] is about six models living in a co-ed residence in the heart of Manhattan and we’re all at different levels of success,” says actor Ben Hollingsworth, whose character is inspired by the show’s creator, former male model turned A-list actor Ashton Kutcher.
“It’s based on Ashton Kutcher and what happened to him as a young guy coming to New York and getting thrown into the modeling industry,” says Ben, who met Ashton while he filmed The Joneses with Ashton’s wife, Demi Moore.
“We were shooting in Atlanta, Georgia and he flew in for her birthday and threw her like a surprise birthday at one of his restaurants,” Ben tells OK!. “That was the first time I got to meet him and he seemed like such a sweet guy. He gave her a birthday cake and he had this really heartfelt speech to her about how special she was in his life. He gave me a good foundation to build this character around.”
“The first episode is real juicy,” Ben says. “The public is going to be real shocked!”
The show makes its debut on September 16.
“We had our first read-through [Wednesday] and we’re all so very excited to have her back. She’s such a great girl,” costar Sara Paxton said at Model Home Project’s pre-launch celebration for The Power of WE at The Gates in New York on Wednesday.
“We really didn’t talk about everything that’s been going on. It was really all work,” Paxton adds.
Costar Ben Hollingsworth admits the cast was just as much in the dark about the specific reason behind Barton’s hospitalization as anyone else. “We were all worried about her. We didn’t really know what was going on, but she’s looking great. She’s feeling great and it’s just good to have her back,” he says. “We start shooting again on Friday and she’s ready to work. We’re all ready to jump into it and are very excited – even Mischa.”
Hollingsworth believes Barton’s new role may help her cope with all that’s been going on in her life.
“She’s gone through it more than anyone in the cast and her character in the show is very intertwined into that lifestyle. I think she’s going to be able to draw on a lot of real-life experiences that she’s had to go through with paparazzi, rumors, and invasion of privacy and all that comes in the public eye,” he says.
As for Hollingsworth’s role on the show: “My character is basically based on Ashton Kutcher (who created the show) and how he experienced life as a model coming to New York from Iowa.”
The Beautiful Life debuts on the CW in September.
