“Melrose Place,” “Vampire Diaries” and “Beautiful Life” are a go at the CW.
The three dramas are being picked up for a fall launch.
The CW hinted at its plans for “Melrose Place” and “Vampire Diaries” when it gave both pilots permission to start making offers to writers and directors.
If the CW pairs the “Melrose Place” reboot with “90210,” that would bring together the updated versions of the Fox series and its spinoff.
With its name recognition and built-in buzz factor, “Melrose” was an instant favorite before a single page of the script was written.
Still, the CW execs waited to watch the CBS Par-produced pilot and liked what they saw.
For the WBTV-produced “Vampire Diaries,” based on Alloy’s series of books about a girl in a love triangle with two vampire brothers, the network hopes to catch the vampire pop culture wave ignited by the success of the “Twilight” franchise and HBO’s “True Blood.”
And with its setting — a co-ed residence of young models — CBS Par/Katalyst’s “Beautiful Life” would make a perfect scripted companion of “America’s Next Top Model.”
It doesn’t hurt that both “Melrose” and “Life” have tabloid-friendly stars — Mischa Barton and Elle MacPherson in “Life” and Ashlee Simpson-Wentz. And “Life” is exec produced by Twitter king Ashton Kutcher.
The CW has a couple of other pilots, including “Life Unexpected,” in consideration for midseason.
This from from an MTV news story about Ashlee Simpson joining the cast of the show:
In addition to the rumor that Locklear will be back for more backstabbing fun, “O.C.” alum Mischa Barton is rumored to make her return to the small screen for “Melrose Place.” If she does, EW.com reports she’ll play the good girl — either med student Lauren or schoolteacher Riley.
“This is news to me,” a rep for Barton told MTV News. “She’s just returned from Europe and heading there again for contractual commitments, but I know she has been reviewing scripts for pilot season, though I haven’t heard of anything specific.”
New rumours are circulating that Mischa is testing for a role on the new Melrose Place. Please take this story with a grain of salt as Mischa has been attached to so many TV shows in the past and nothing has ever come about. Besides, I’m sure Mischa wouldn’t have to “test” for a role on The CW, she’d pretty much be able to click her fingers.
Is Mischa Barton Moving In To Melrose Place?
We haven’t seen Mischa Barton on TV since Twilight star Cam Gigandet ran Marissa Cooper off an O.C. road a few years back, but it could just be a matter of time. An industry insider tells me that Mischa is testing for a role on The CW’s Melrose Place remake today, saying the network is very excited about her.
No surprise, as they had originally wanted Barton to play Gossip Girl‘s Georgina Sparks, a part that eventually went to Michelle Trachtenberg. Seems M.B. is more interested in the idea of depicting an adult TV character.
And you? Are you into the idea of an all grown up Barton back in your living room every week? I think it’s a good move for the show. While old school Melrose fans will probably tune in for the new series’ first episode, younger viewers who are more familiar with The O.C. may watch because of Mischa.
If she does in fact land the role, she will go to work with Greek‘s Michael Rady who was cast as Jonah Miller, an aspiring filmmaker, last week. His character is said to be a lot like the original show’s Billy, played by Andrew Shue.
No word on which veteran Melrose character Mischa might be emulating. Marcia Cross‘ crazy Kimberly maybe?!
